The History: Captain Benjamin Church captured Chief Anawan, a Wampanoag sachem and advisor to King Philip, at Anawan Rock in August 1676. This action ended the King Philip's War in southeastern Massachusetts. Anawan, along with his remaining warriors, fled to this location at the edge of Squanakonk Swamp to hide from the English troops that were searching the woods of southeastern Massachusetts for any remaining Indian resistance.

Church, a famous Indian fighter, received word from an Indian informant that Anawan was hiding in the north end of Squanakok Swamp. After a difficult march to the site (Route 44 did not exist at the time), Church and his company surprised Anawan, who surrendered without a fight.

Anawan was taken to Plymouth. Despite the protest of Captain Church, who had given Anawan a promise of safe conduct at his surrender, the authorities there beheaded him.

The Paranormal: Cape And Islands Paranormal Research Society has conducted numerous visits to this location. The ledged written about the paranormal activity is the following:

The smell of campfire smoke in or around Anawan Rock (no fire present)

A vanishing bon fire atop the rock (1 record of this account)

A booming male voice yelling "Iootash, Iootash"! Reports say this is the

Algonquin meaning for "Stand and Fight".

CAIPRS Findings: The team has been to Anawan Rock over a dozen times. CAIPRS investigators have never seen a campfire, nor smell of any smoke (that wasn't there). We have never heard the word "Iootash". There are allot of variables that could attribute to some of the alleged events. We found houses within 100 yards of the rock that are heated by woodstoves (noticed the stacks in the roof). Children can be heard in all directions and also the road were you can find this rock off is 200 yards away and you can hear the vehicles go by. We conducted a test if someone yells from a moving vehicle going the posted speed limit by the entrance of the area you can clearly hear from the rock.

Conclusion:  Inconclusive

We believe that the people who have experienced the events, could have. We do not dismiss any ones claim of paranormal events, we look for evidence and at the same time look for rational explanations that could cause someone to "think" they had an encounter with the supernatural.
