Profile Rock

The History:  Profile Rock has been part of the tourist section in Assonet, Massachusetts. It is said that the rock is from the "gods" to represent Chief Massasoit. However, the likeness was created in the mid 1800's, yes that's right the face has not been there since the dawn of time. It was created from dynamite. The story has it that there was a village thief who on Sunday's while everyone in town was at church would steal peoples belongings and hide in a cave that once stood in the area where Profile Rock stands today. The town folk had found out about this thieves where about and tracked him down to this cave. After recovering the stolen property the town thought it would be in the best interest to destroy the cave. So with that plan, they set up dynamite and removed the cave and creating out of the rubble Profile Rock on one side of this geo. When visiting Profile Rock you can see from a nice vantage point the Profile of an Indian, while you are there you can climb the geo and see Taunton, Fall River from atop this mountain. We are not saying this area does not play a role with any native American history, we are just saying Profile Rock was the creation of a thief.
